During the presentation of the Madeira Ocean Challenge 2022, which took place today, in the Noble Hall of the Municipality, the Mayor of Funchal (CMF), Pedro Calado, highlighted the importance of sport in the development of children and young adults.
“This is a matter that I will not tire of talking about because I know that every investment made in sports prepares young people for the future, and keeps them out of the way of drugs. We have superb natural resources and good weather which makes outdoor sports a pleasure.”
The Madeira Ocean Challenge takes place on the 5th and 6th of November and is broken down into three events, with approximately 200 canoeists taking part.
Pedro Calado praised the “success” of the tests held by the Association aimed at monetising and valuing infrastructure, namely the São Lázaro Nautical Centre, as well as promoting Madeira, especially as the Madeira Canoeing Association are working closely with various international publications, which has attracted internationally renowned athletes and Olympic canoeists.
There are several levels: Juniors, Seniors, U23, Masters A, B, and C, Men, and Women, and mixed crews. Those taking part are from Portugal, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Brazil, and the Czech Republic.
