Vespas Maradas – The Need For an Inclusive Society

This morning,  the Mayor of Funchal, Pedro Calado welcomed the ‘Vespas Maradas Association’ before they started their ‘Island Tour.’ During the meeting, Pedro Calado stressed the importance of this event in the “cultural dissemination” of the city and the island.

A total of 150 people riding 100 motorcycles will take part in this year’s event, and travel about 100 km across Madeira and Porto Santo in three days. The event is a leisure race, not a speed race, and has even attracted entrants from Italy.

The ‘Vespas Maradas’ Association arose from the need of a group of motorcyclist enthusiasts to promote motorcycling by holding sporting, recreational, social, and cultural events, and initiatives to protect disadvantaged minorities and promote gender equality. With regard to this, The mayor of Funchal stressed the importance of the initiative as it serves as an example “of creating a social spirit and combating prejudices and social stigmas.”

Under the Financial Support Programme to Associativism, this event was granted 2,050.00 euros in support from the Municipality of Funchal.
