An earthquake measuring 1.5 on the Richter Scale was recorded at 02:19 this morning off the south coast of Funchal, according to the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) website.
Due to its low intensity it is unlikely to have been felt. However, people have commented that there are a lot of minor tremors taking place on the north/ north west of the island, namely through São Vincente and Calheta, with one person saying that they heard a sonic boom before the furniture in their house started to move.
