The Funchal City Council (CMF), through Frente MarFunchal, has issued a statement confirming that the Doca do Cavacas beach was temporarily closed today, due to the detection of pollution in the sea water. This was discovered through the fortnightly bathing water inspection carried out by the Regional Health Directorate.
The values detected in the analysis, in the laboratory, determined that by law the red flag had to be raised until a new analysis is carried out confirming that the waters are safe again. The new results are expected on Friday morning, and until then, the beach will remain open to bathers, however, the waters and the natural pools will remain out of bounds.
The Funchal City Council, together with the Frente MarFunchal immediately carried out local infrastructure checks of the beach and restaurant facilities, and found no anomalies. After this, the CMF focused their attention on the surrounding areas, namely to the east of the Doca do Cavacas, towards Funchal, where the pollution appeared to be coming from.
