The associations, Abraço-delegation of Funchal, APF Madeira, the Portuguese Foundation “A Comunidade Contra a AIDS”, Opus Gay Madeira and the ex aequo network, have organised a vigil in memory of AIDS victims on the 15th of May 2022 at 20:00 in Largo do Município. All participants are asked to bring a candle with them.
It should be noted that this is a national vigil included in the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial has been held since 1983, to remember all the people who have died from AIDS, as well as to honour all those who have dedicated and dedicate their lives to helping people affected with HIV.
The participating cities in Portugal are Funchal, Leiria, Lisbon, Miranda do Douro, Ponta Delgada, Porto, Torres Vedras, Vila Nova de Gaia and Viseu.
Abraço, it should be noted, is a Private Social Solidarity Institution (IPSS), provides support to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS and/or other sexually transmitted diseases, also developing HIV prevention and screening actions. It was founded on the 5th of June 1992, and its Madeira branch was opened in 1995. There are currently four delegations (Lisbon, Setúbal, Funchal and Porto).
