In a statement published today, the Funchal City Council (CMF) has confirmed that the road works currently going on, on Estrada Monumental near the Forum Madeira Shopping Centre will be completed by mid-December.
As reported recently, the current cycle path extension will be altered to ensure that two lanes of traffic will be able to circulate freely in what is an incredibly busy area. The road is a main artery into the city, and is heavily used by residents, tourists and local business people.
The president of the CMF, Pedro Calado, has taken a strong interest in the project and intends to speed up the works, and ensure that concurrent works on the basic sanitation and water networks are completed at the same time to prevent any further delays, which will again ease traffic congestion during the build up to Christmas. ‘As the area,’ said the Mayor, is “quite chaotic.’ Furthermore,” he said “it does not make any sense, given the limitation of lanes, to give precedence to a cycle path (near Forum Madeira) to the detriment of the population’s need for greater car accessibility.”
