Pedro Calado, the leader of the Funchal Semper à Frente Coalition, accompanied by some of his team members, visited the gardens of Almirante Reis, Old Town, today, and definitely did not like what he saw, saying that the public gardens are both degraded and abandoned, and as such, he is committing himself and his team to renovating this unique urban green space.
His proposed project includes the provision of more outdoor sports equipment, increased public lighting and a car park. Obviously passionate about the project, he said, “Firstly, it is necessary to create a car park which can be used by local businesses and the general public, and by doing this we will avoid the parking problems that are currently in existence. Secondly, although the garden areas include an outside physical exercise area and skate park, more needs to be done in improving these facilities, as well as installing a new Padel Park and a new physical exercise circuit. Thirdly, the gardens need to be planted and structured in such a way that everyone can enjoy them.
By doing this, Pedro Calado is convinced that the new garden framework will bring more people to the city centre, while the park, with its improved lighting will be open 24/7, allowing families, friends and dog owners to socialise and have fun. Furthermore, with better public lighting in the area, both the park, and the surrounding area will become safer, thus protecting the population and local businesses.
