Miguel Silva Gouveia, Mayor of Funchal, announced this morning that after a meeting with the Municipal Civil Protection, Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal, and other municipal entities, it has been agreed to fell ‘at risk trees’ to ensure the safety of the population, visitors and property at Largo da Fonte, in Monte. As such, heavy cutting machinery was on site early this morning.
The mayor also stressed that an internal investigation process is being developed to understand what happened, once again stating that these trees are continually monitored.
Furthermore, the Mayor of Funchal has confirmed that this weekend’s incident will not impact on the Festa do Monte, which had already been moved closer to the church to ensure the safety of all those attending the festivities.
