The Trees of Funchal

This morning, in the Municipal Garden, a talk was held by Rodrigo Camacho titled ‘Equilibrium Project: Our Trees,’  which is part of Funchal’s candidacy for the European Capital of Culture in 2027 initiative.

This project proposal, which will be supported by the Funchal City Council to a value of 4,100 euros, is part of an alternative cultural itinerary that allows visitors and residents alike to discover, through art and local stories dedicated to some of the capitals trees, a glimpse of Funchal’s fascinating arboreal heritage.

According to the Mayor of Funchal, Miguel Silva Gouveia, this project will add an important layer to Funchal’s history, proving that a balance can exist between humans, cities and the longevity of trees. He applauded the initiative by saying that it will ‘consolidate and enrich’ Funchal’s candidacy for the European Capital of Culture in 2027, especially as the project will allow the Madeiran capital to differ from its competitors.
