Monk Seal Rests on Pebble Beach

A young Monk Seal was spotted yesterday briefly snoozing on Paul do Mar’s pebble beach. According to the President of the Junta de Freguesia, Paulo Rodrigues, the seal basked in the sun for a ‘few brief moments, ‘ and that it is not uncommon for Monk Seals to visit this particular beach.

As yet, no autopsy details have been released with regard to the 12-year-old female Maminhas, who was found dead on Tabaqueiro beach in Deserta Pequena.

Monk seals can live up to 30 years of age in the wild, and slightly less in captivity, but many never reach this.
