Total Island Blackout and Flooding

A power surge at the 60 KV transport line between Calheta and Funchal causing damage to the Vitória Thermal Power Station system last night, left approximately 230,000 energy users sitting in the dark.

Power came back on slowly after about 2 hours, but in many places the power flicked on and off again and only returned this morning.

In additional to the black out, many roads, buildings and underground carparks were flooded due to the amount of water that fell. The highest levels of snow and rain fell on Pico do Areeiro. At 6 pm last night the amount of rainfall on the peak had reached a 127.0 litres per square metre, with 46.6 litres falling in a single hour. Hail also fell on Funchal.

Below are several videos showing the affects of yesterday’s storm.
