When questioned by reporters if Madeira’s schools would close early for the Christmas holidays, the President, Miguel Albuquerque said that it would be “counterproductive” since Madeira’s schools are “scrupulously complying” with the measures issued by the Regional Director of Health.
In a brief statement, he said “’If we close the schools early we have a problem, parents will have to take time off work to look after their children, in addition children may come into contact with older siblings who have returned home for Christmas and who are in isolation. If we allow this to happen we will lose the chance to both monitor and control the situation. At the moment, the safest place for these children to be is at school.
