Covid – Kindergarten Closes

The Regional Secretary for Education has confirmed the closure of the ‘O Principezinho’ kindergarten in Caniço, as a second child has tested Covid positive.

In their statement, the office for the Regional Secretary of Health stated “that as part of the schools Covid contingency plan it will remain closed until further notice.”

Meanwhile the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, guarantees that despite the increase in new cases of local transmission, the Region is not facing a situation of community transmission.

He went on to warn that the “most dangerous stage” will be with the students return to to Madeira during the Christmas holidays. As such, he has asked all students to take their PCR tests before coming to Madeira, in order to shorten the isolation period between the first and second test.

With approximately 4,000 students expected to return in the coming weeks, Miguel Albuquerque also calls on young students and their families to collaborate with the health authority, and respect the period of isolation at home in order to prevent the epidemiological situation from becoming uncontrollable.
