Tourist Maps, Now Available in Braille

As part of World Tourism Day celebrations, the Funchal City Council (CMF) presented two initiatives designed to ensure inclusion and accessibility for the visually impaired and those with special needs. Speaking to journalists, during the unveiling of the new braille tourist map, ‘Funchal Destino Acessível,’ in Paços do Concelho, the Mayor of Funchal, Miguel Silva Gouveia, welcomed the new initiative saying that the new tourist map “seeks to enable the visually impaired to become more familiar with our city and the riches that it contains.”

The ‘Funchal Destino Acessível’ itinerary comprises the main points of interest in the city, guaranteeing accessibility for people with reduced mobility or for people with other types of special needs.

Urged to comment on the measures adopted in terms of inclusion, the Mayor stated that it has been a journey made over several years. “We have been trying to reduce inequalities, trying to create a city that everyone, without exception, can enjoy.”
