Stream and River Cleaning in Progress

The Vice-President (VP) of the Municipality of Funchal, Idalina Perestrelo, stated that seventeen streams are to be cleaned as part of the CMF’s flood prevention initiative. This work is currently underway and should be completed in September at a cost of about €63,000.

Idalina Perestrelo explained, that “there are about 9 thousand linear metres of water courses located around population centres throughout all the parishes in Funchal.  These are being cleaned to ensure that nothing impedes the flow of water, such as invasive plants and rubbish, and as such minimize the threat of flooding.”  The intention is that all water courses will be cleared in time for winter and seasonal rainfall.

The Vice President went on to say that “the sustainability of these basins is of extreme relevance to the CMF, and that the authorities are committed to ensuring the safety of all of those who live in the municipality.

In order to facilitate a cleaner Funchal, the VP again stated that the City Council offers a free collection service for ‘monsters,’ too avoid them being dumped in streams and rivers. For further information, or to schedule a collection please call 291 230 821 or 291 751 871.
