The new mask wearing law is creating palpitations throughout the tourism sector, and tourism agency ‘Trans Madeira’ alerted local newspaper JM advising them that the “unclear and poorly communicated” mandatory use of the mask in open public spaces is already having a detrimental affect on the island’s precarious tourism market. Adding, “in addition to the cancellations that are easy to quantify, there are others that are not so easy, these are those people who were considering coming to Madeira, but have decided against it, as they do not want to wear a mask for the duration of their holiday.”
The Madeiran company also suggests that those in power who do not believe that there will be a knock on effect should listen to the tourist, hotel and local accommodations companies to understand what is happening at a grass root level.
