The President of the Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, is convinced that the region will overcome its greatest challenge to date; the devastating effect Covid-19 has had on tourism. 

We Have to Count our Chickens

While visiting a chicken farm 'Aviatlântico' in Santo António da Serra, the President of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, said that 'his objective is to increase, as much as possible, the region's self-sufficiency in poultry farming. Currently, the Regions chicken farmers raise around 2.5 million birds a year, about 50% of what is consumed annually by Madeirans.

Risks Justify Masks

The President of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, again justified the use of masks by saying that the exponential increase in positive cases of Covid-19 in Madeira does not surprise the Regional Government, which, for this very reason, they enforced the use of masks outdoors. 

Tighter Supervision Called For

While attending the 8th anniversary of the Banco Alimentar - Mão Solidária, in Santo António, Funchal, the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, stated that “he did not approve of the images he'd seen of groups of people gathering together as they had at the Calheta Rally last weekend, some of whom did not comply with social distancing requirements and the wearing of masks.

Support for Farmers Guaranteed

During a presidential visit to Lamaceiros, Porto Moniz, where Miguel Albuquerque visited a three-hectare vineyard owned by Manuel Ramos Lucas and dedicated to the growing of Verdelho grapes, the President assured farmers that the government will continue to support agriculture and entrepreneurs within the sector.

Individual and Remunerated Passenger Transport (TVDE) Controversy Continues

At the regional parliament, representatives of two Madeira Taxi Driver Associations met with the islands President, Miguel Albuquerque,  the Regional Secretary for Economy, Rui Barreto, and the Regional Secretary for Social Inclusion and Citizenship, Augusta Aguiar, to argue against new digital platforms for passenger transportation, in unmarked vehicles (Individual and Remunerated Passenger Transport TVDE), whose model is being adapted to the region, on the basis that they constitute 'negative and unfair competition' in the sector.
