Pedro Calado, the leader of the Funchal Semper à Frente Coalition, accompanied by some of his team members, visited the gardens of Almirante Reis, Old Town, today, and definitely did not like what he saw, saying that the public gardens are both degraded and abandoned, and as such, he is committing himself and his team to renovating this unique urban green space.

Some Trees Will Have to Go!

Miguel Silva Gouveia, Mayor of Funchal, announced this morning that after a meeting with the Municipal Civil Protection, Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal, and other municipal entities, it has been agreed to fell 'at risk trees' to ensure the safety of the population, visitors and property at Largo da Fonte, in Monte.  As such, heavy cutting machinery was on site early this morning.

Spreading Arboreal Panic

In lieu on the Monte tree incident this afternoon, members of the People's Monarchist Party (PPM - Madeira) visited some of the Funchal's arboreal spaces, and have identified another 'potential tree catastrophe' in a garden behind the Dr. Agostinho Cardoso Health Centre, Campo do Barco.  The tree is hollow and in danger of falling.

Pedro Calado Comments on 2nd Monte Tree Incident

Quick off the mark, Mayor of Funchal candidate, Pedro Calado (Vice-President of the Regional Government), wrote on his social media pages, “I will never make political use of any type of tragedy. But I have to say that it is time to improve and take responsibility.  What happened today only proves, once again, that we really cannot have any confidence in our current municipal executive.”
