Christmas Retail Opening Times Debate

Ivo Silva, the Chairman of the Board of the Union of Office, Commerce and Services Workers of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (SITAM), has indicated that the Câmara of Funchal is indifferent “to the problems that affect three thousand workers, and has proposed that during the Christmas season retail establishments should close at 7 pm on weekdays, at 2 pm on Saturdays and not open at all on Sundays or public holidays.”

Today, the SITAM Board addressed a request for a meeting with the Funchal municipality in which it called for dialogue with union representatives and employers’ associations.  The union will meet council members from Câmara da Ribeira Brava on Wednesday to discuss business opening hours.
