3-Year Paul da Serra Walking Trail Partnership

The Vereda do Pico Ruivo do Paul da Serra will receive regular conservation and maintenance work over the next three years through a partnership between the Rotary Club of Funchal and the PortoBay Group.

The agreement, signed on the 22nd of September at Porto Mare’s offices in Funchal, aims to improve access and safety for walkers while helping to protect Madeira’s vegetation and natural heritage.

According to a press release, the agreement was signed by Rotary Club of Funchal president Kai Hagenbuch and José Carlos Silva, the PortoBay Group director responsible for projects and sustainability.

The partnership builds on an agreement signed between the Rotary Club and the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) on the 6th of July this year, covering the management, improvement, signposting and maintenance of the trail.

Work is already under way. On Tuesday, the 20th of October, representatives from both organisations visited the Estanquinhos area to carry out their first joint cleaning and conservation work.

The initiative marked the start of a three-year programme intended to balance access for walkers with the protection of the area’s natural environment.

The Rotary Club of Funchal welcomed the partnerships, describing them as “an example of cooperation for the benefit of the community, visitors and future generations.”
