The Portuguese Labour Party (PTP) has called on the Regional Government to clarify whether it knew about the activities of two Funchal-based companies named in a Brazilian Federal Police investigation into Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s possible undisclosed involvement in a betting business.
The demand follows a report in DIÁRIO on the 23rd of October, that linked Alcazar Holdings and Cathedral, registered at the same office in Funchal, to the investigation.
Report documents identify Bolsonaro as a “master user” of an Alcazar Holdings account. Cathedral is alleged to have paid travel expenses for the Brazilian politician and his family, including private jet journeys. Bank records and travel payments are among the material reportedly being examined by investigators.
PTP leader Raquel Coelho called on the Regional Government to explain what it knew about the companies, what checks had been carried out on their beneficial owners and what action it would take in response.
“The Madeira Free Trade Zone only appears in the news for the worst reasons. We don’t want to be known as a haven for alleged criminal activity,” she said.
The party also wants clarification on measures to prevent Madeira from being used by companies implicated in international investigations.
The reported references to the companies and Bolsonaro form part of an ongoing investigation and do not, in themselves, establish wrongdoing.
