The second helicopter intended to support firefighting in Madeira has arrived on the island. It is being taken to the Regional Civil Protection Service’s Air Resources Centre in Cancela, where it will be prepared for operations.
Under a contract signed last week between Helibravo and the Portuguese Air Force, the helicopter will serve the Region from the 1st of October to the 30th of November. The State will cover its operating costs during that period, which runs to the end of Madeira’s Special Rural Firefighting Programme.
The light helicopter is similar to the aircraft first contracted by the Regional Government in 2018. Helibravo also operates Madeira’s existing helicopter, which is stationed on the island year-round and funded by the Regional Budget.
The new helicopter is equipped for firefighting only. Unlike the existing aircraft, it cannot be used for rescue operations.
