The Madeira archipelago recorded further seismic activity early on Sunday morning. According to official data from the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA), an earthquake was detected at 06:35 on the13th of September 2026, with its epicentre north of Porto Santo, at coordinates 34.210° North and 16.392° West.
The earthquake had a magnitude of 2.0 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres. It was a low-intensity event, close to the threshold of a microearthquake, and no damage or danger to the population was reported.
It was the second earthquake recorded in the region in less than 24 hours. At 15:16 UTC on Saturday, the 12th of September, a smaller earthquake measuring magnitude 1.7 was detected north of Porto Moniz. Its epicentre was located at coordinates 33.292° North and 17.150° West, at a depth of 20 kilometres.
Such minor earthquakes around the Madeira archipelago are considered part of the region’s normal seismic activity, linked to geological faults in the North Atlantic. Neither of the two events posed a threat to the population.
