It looked like a scene straight out of a movie, but it happened at Madeira Airport. A tourist was ‘caught’ this morning after running across the runway in an attempt to catch up with a flight that was about to depart.
According to DIÁRIO, a 60-year-old man climbed over the security fence at one end of the airport and made his way onto the runway, attempting to reach a Ryanair flight scheduled to depart at 06:20 for Charleroi, Belgium.
Despite the apparent security breach, the individual was quickly detected by the airport’s surveillance systems and teams and intercepted. When questioned by the authorities, the man justified his action by saying “it the quickest way to get to the plane!”
