The parliamentary group of Chega in the Assembly of the Republic has submitted a draft resolution that recommends to the government “the creation of a national programme for the survey, transfer and rehabilitation of vacant public housing assets, with priority given to abandoned State neighbourhoods.”
The initiative was prepared as part of the work carried out by Chega deputies in the Committee on Infrastructure, Housing and Mobility, where Madeiran deputy Francisco Gomes serves as coordinator of the parliamentary group.
The project provides for “the urgent identification of vacant or underused public properties, the recovery of old prison neighbourhoods, neighbourhoods connected to dams and hydroelectric plants, workers’ villages and other public housing complexes that are currently abandoned.”
The proposal also recommends “the transfer of these properties to interested municipalities, the creation of financing lines for rehabilitation, and the use of these properties to provide affordable housing and controlled cost rental properties.”
“The country is experiencing a brutal housing crisis, and the State continues to let entire neighbourhoods rot in abandonment. This is incompetence, an insult to Portuguese families and an offence to the thousands of young people who cannot leave their parents’ home.”
According to the parliamentarian, “there are hundreds of unused public properties while thousands of Portuguese face difficulties in paying rent or finding a home.” He also considers it unacceptable that the State continues to build new projects while ignoring or minimally maintaining abandoned and degraded housing sites.”
“The government prefers propaganda and advertisements instead of recovering existing assets that could immediately serve the Portuguese. This in itself is incomprehensible.”
The deputy argues that the recovery of these neighbourhoods can also help to combat the depopulation of the interior and create conditions to settle the population outside the large urban centres.”
“It makes no sense to continue to abandon territory, homes and entire communities while so many families live suffocated by the housing crisis. This project can help make a difference, and we hope that parliament will approve it.”
