The Regional Government, through the Regional Secretary for the Economy, José Manuel Rodrigues, has asked the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing to adopt measures to guarantee minimum services during the general strike scheduled for the 3rd of June, to safeguard the maritime supply of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
In a letter sent this Friday to Miguel Pinto Luz, the Regional Secretary for the Economy stated that the minimum services outlined in the strike notice are not enough to meet the Region’s needs. Citing past arbitration decisions in similar cases, he argued that at least one vessel should be guaranteed on the day of the strike to ensure supply shipments to the autonomous regions and to manage ship movements when wharf availability for goods to or from the islands is at stake.
The Madeiran official warns of the impact that the stoppage could have on the loading and unloading movements of ships that ensure the weekly supply of the Region, stressing that, in an island region, any disturbance in this operation could affect the population’s access to food and health.
José Manuel Rodrigues also recalls that the strike could compromise the supply of regional health services, the flow of regional products and the normal activity of companies, with repercussions on the final cost of goods and the availability of goods.
The minister therefore calls for the intervention of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing, in conjunction with the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, to ensure the regular supply of Madeira and prevent constraints in the supply of cargo to the Region.
