The NOW channel has stated that the Lisbon Court of Appeal has confirmed strong indications of corruption within the scope of “Operation Zarco,” an investigation launched on the 24th of January 2024, which involved about 130 searches in Madeira, the Azores, and the mainland.
According to the same station, the recently disclosed judgment overturns the assessment made by the investigating judge, who in February 2024 had downplayed the evidence gathered during the investigation. This decision comes after the Supreme Justice Court annulled the coercive measures and instructed the Court of Appeal to conduct a new assessment.
The process involves former mayor Pedro Calado and businessmen Avelino Farinha and CustĂłdio Correia.
One of the defendants is responsible for three crimes of receiving or offering an advantage, one crime of passive corruption, and another of qualified tax fraud.
Another defendant is accused of active corruption, and the third of undue offer or repayment of advantage.
