The municipal deputies of Chega in the Municipal Assembly of Funchal demand that the municipal executive of the PSD/CDS “scrupulous compliance with the diploma recently approved in the Assembly of the Republic, which expressly prohibits the display of flags of an ideological, partisan or associative nature in public buildings.”
“The new legislation is clear as to what can be hoisted on State facades and masts: only institutional flags, such as the National, the Autonomous Region of Madeira, and the European Union. Intentional infractions are subject to fines between 200 and 4,000 euros.”
Chega argues that “public buildings belong to all citizens and cannot be instrumentalised to promote what it calls divisive agendas. The Funchal City Council has to be a space of neutrality and unity, not a stage for propaganda for the clientele of the left and the extreme left,” warning “that they will not tolerate any exemptions that disrespects Parliament approved law.”
“To support the position, the elected representatives recall the recent example of the Lisbon City Council, which in May rejected a proposal by the Left Bloc to raise the LGBT flag in the Town Hall, precisely based on the principle of institutional neutrality. For Chega, Funchal cannot be an exception.”
The deputies emphasize that their stance does not compromise anyone’s rights, stating that all people have equal citizenship and dignity regardless of sexual orientation. Chega advocates respect for all Funchal residents, while rejecting what they describe as the use of public institutions to promote a gender agenda.
Concluding, they issued a warning to the executive: its performance will be inspected with total rigor and, if the law is violated, the legal and administrative mechanisms provided for in the new diploma will be activated.
