The Regional Secretary for Equipment and Infrastructures, Pedro Rodrigues, has announced the pilot project to modernise the public lighting network, an investment of 2.1 million euros under the RRP, which will allow savings of around 40% in energy consumption on public roads.
8,750 high-efficiency LED luminaires were assembled by the 11 municipalities of the region, whose operation and energy expenditure can be controlled from the remote management system located in the building of the Madeira Electricity Company, on Rua Pestana jĂşnior.
Pedro Rodrigues explained that everything is set up so that the 11 municipalities join the new system at their own cost; however, these costs will be offset by the savings the system will allow on the electricity bill, in the order of four million per year.
Municipalities now have access to the newly installed lighting points and can decide where and when they’re used. This groundbreaking system in the region also makes it possible to detect network failures quickly, enabling faster fixes and reducing maintenance costs for the public lighting network.
