Curral das Freiras Cable Car System Online Debate

The civic movement ‘It is possible to prevent the destruction of the seawall’, which defends the protection of the valley of Curral das Freiras and its ecosystems, as well as the preservation of the seawall geosite, is promoting a public debate on the “Environmental Compliance Report of the Execution Project (RECAPE).”

The initiative will take place on Monday, the 4th of May, at 20:00 via Zoom, and will focus on the document currently under discussion.

According to the movement, the debate aims, first of all, to disseminate more widely what is at stake in the implementation of the “Curral das Freiras Cable Car System.”

Secondly, it aims to encourage civic participation in the public consultation process on environmental impacts and, thirdly, to systematise relevant information that can contribute to the Environmental Impact Assessment of the project.

The civic movement also considers that the 15-day deadline for public discussion of the procedure, promoted by the Regional Government of Madeira through the Regional Directorate for the Environment and the Sea, as the Environmental Impact Assessment Authority in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, is a “hasty way of carrying out the public consultation,” arguing that it does not ensure a “significant participatory involvement of citizens.”
