Today, the Social Democrats unanimously passed a change to their statutes, removing the 12-year Presidential limit, allowing the island’s leader to preside over the Government of Madeira.
“The Statutes of PSD Madeira cannot contradict the national Statutes in this matter,” said the party’s Secretary-General, JosĂ© Prada, at the XX Regional Congress that takes place today and Sunday in Funchal.
This was the most significant statutory amendment presented to congressmen, that of Article 15, a measure that was defended by Miguel Albuquerque.
“According to item 3 of the Article, no militant can hold the same position or serve in the same Party bodies for more than 12 consecutive years. Clause 4 adds that if this 12-year limit is reached while serving in elected bodies of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the restriction only takes effect after the current mandate for those regional bodies ends.”
Based on this stipulation, Miguel Albuquerque would cease to be the leader of the PSD/Madeira in 2029, when his term as head of the Madeiran executive ends.
Now, with this change, Albuquerque can continue to reapply for the leadership of the party and, if chosen by the militants, also be a candidate for President of the Regional Government of Madeira in the next legislative elections in the archipelago.
José Prada stressed that the changes were necessary to ensure political stability in the autonomous region.
