Snoezelen Room Agreement

A protocol has been signed between ADENORMA and the Social Security Institute of Madeira (ISSM), under the supervision of the Regional Secretariat for Inclusion, Work and Youth, which will allow the creation of a Snoezelen Room at the Centre for Activities and Training for Inclusion of São Vicente, reinforcing the response to people with disabilities, the elderly and other vulnerable groups in the North Zone of the Region. (Snoezenlen Rooms are multi-sensory environments using light, smell, sound, and touch as a way of helping those suffering from autism, dementia, and brain injuries).

This is a partnership that results from the “synergy of efforts between an IPSS and the Social Institution of Madeira,” to provide a more qualified response not only to users of the CACI of São Vicente, but also to other users of ADENORMA and elderly people in situations of greater fragility. Paula Margarido emphasised that the scientific literature recognises Snoezelen rooms as an effective response for people with disabilities and cognitive impairments, considering it a “pleasure and privilege” to contribute to this project.

The President of the association, Medeiros Gaspar, explained that the protocol represents “the indispensable first step” to move forward with a funding application. ADENORMA will provide the equipment, estimating an investment of between 10,000 and 15,000 euros, 15% of which will be borne by the promoter itself. “Without the provision of the space, we would not be able to move forward with the application,” he stressed, adding that the room will benefit CACI users and the elderly, with technical monitoring from Social Security.

Nivalda Gonçalves, President of the ISSM, shared that the CACI in São Vicente, located in Rosário, currently serves 20 users. This will be the third Snoezelen room added to CACIs in the Region, which has 11 centres and around 400 users. The new facility will mainly benefit the municipality of São Vicente and the North Zone population, helping to address a current territorial gap.
