Hospital Death – Enquiry Opens

An 82-year-old man died after falling from a 3rd-floor window of the Hospital dos Marmeleiros, in circumstances that are yet to be clarified.

According to what could be ascertained, the elderly man was classified as a ‘problematic discharge.’ Despite being clinically cured, he had been hospitalised for some time because he was waiting for a vacancy in a senior care institution, and he couldn’t leave the hospital as he had no one to take care of him.

Following the incident, SESARAM has announced that it is opening an internal inquiry into the accident.

In response to questions asked by DIÁRIO reporters, the Health Service of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (SESARAM) “deeply” regrets the death of the man and offers its most heartfelt condolences to the family,” noting that the necessary support is being provided to the family.

The entity stated that an internal investigation has been launched right away to thoroughly examine the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.  “SESARAM will fully cooperate with the competent police authorities, who are responsible for investigating the causes of the occurrence,” stated a SESARAM spokesperson.

For reasons of professional secrecy and data protection, SESARAM said it was not possible to disclose information about the patient’s clinical history or individual context. Even so, it guarantees that the elderly man benefited from “permanent multidisciplinary monitoring, in accordance with hsopital rules and protocols.”
