Category 6 Weather Warning Issued

The Captaincy of Funchal announced, this afternoon, that it received from the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) a category 6 severe weather warning for the archipelago of Madeira, which corresponds to wind force 7 (51 to 62 km per hour) from any direction.

A Note signed by Captain Bruno Ferreira further states that the general situation until 18:00 on Sunday will be as follows: a very fresh northwest wind (40 to 50km/hour) is expected at strong (51 to 61km/hour), decreasing to cool (31 to 39km/hour) to very fresh (40 to 50km/hour) from the middle of the night, gradually turning north from the end of the morning.

Visibility it will be good, but sometimes weak. On the North Coast, the waves will be from the northwest with 3.5 to 4.5 meters in height, gradually decreasing to 2.5 to 3.5 metres in height from the morning. On the south coast, we will have west/southwest waves with 1 to 2 metres high, being 3 to 4 metres high in the western part of the island of Madeira until early morning.

The Captaincy recommends that the entire maritime community and the population in general take care if travelling by sea or walking along coastal areas. They advise:

– Strengthen the mooring and keep a close watch on moored vessels and anchored;

– Avoid walking by the sea or in areas exposed to sea agitation, for example, jetties for the protection of ports, cliffs, or beaches, due to rogue waves.

-Do not fish, especially near the cliffs and areas of cliffs frequently hit by the breaking waves, as the sea can easily reach areas that are presumed safe.

Please check the status of your walking routes before setting out. Official pedestrian routes were closed today (Saturday) due to bad weather.
