Images captured by a curious passer-by show a man sunbathing in the nude on one of the rock outcrops off the Lido promenade this morning.
The man was seen contentedly reading, totally oblivious to the stir he was causing among locals and visitors. He wasn’t totally nude, as he was wearing a baseball cap!
The Portuguese Penal Code prohibits “exhibitionism” in public spaces. This includes engaging in explicit or offensive acts of nudity. Violations of these laws can result in fines or even imprisonment (beachatlas.com). Portugal does have nudist beaches, but I am unaware of any in Madeira.
