Several hours-old kittens were found inside a rubbish bag yesterday morning in São Roque, Funchal. JM was alerted to the situation by a distressed resident who described the shocking conditions in which the animals were discovered.
“They still have the placenta attached, so it is clear that they were taken from their mother as soon as they were born and treated like rubbish, and thrown away.” The person who found the kittens said that this is the second time he has found abandoned kittens in a rubbish bin in the area, but he does not know who was responsible.
The animals were rescued by the Animal Association ‘Vamos Lá Madeira’ and immediately taken to the vets, as the placenta was still causing health complications.
“Not only is it illegal to abandon animals, but it is cruel and insensitive. And it’s useless, too. In just a few weeks, the mother cat will have kittens again. We ask the person who has the mother cat to contact us so that we can help finance her sterilisation and look after her,” reinforced Tierri Alveno, President of Vamos La Madeira.
