Patience Advises Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa

The President of the Republic reacted today to the disruption towards the regional budget for 2025, and on prospective new regional legislative elections, saying, “we cannot put the cart before the horse.”

On a visit to the Netherlands, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa considered that it is necessary to “wait” for the result of the motion of censure to decide on the political future of Madeira, namely on possible early elections, after the Regional Budget has been rejected in general.

The head of state recalled that “the Budget was rejected in general and there will be a vote on the motion of censure. Let’s wait and see,” he stressed.

He went on to say:

“I, now, do not admit anything, as you know, the representative of the Republic has to receive the parties, then he will talk to me, if necessary, and then, I, will see.” He stated emphatically.

Marcelo also said that “it would have been easier for the future of the region to have the Budget approved,” but noted that the parties and the Legislative Assembly of Madeira “have all the legitimacy” to “approve or reject the Budget.”

The proposals for the Budget and Investment Plan for 2025 presented by the Government of Madeira, led by the social democrat Miguel Albuquerque, were rejected today after a general discussion. This is the first time this has happened in the regional parliament.
