In September 2024, 220 deaths were recorded in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, slightly lower than in September 2023 (1 less death; -0.5%). From January to September, there were 1,950 deaths, 160 less than in the same period of the previous year (-7.6%), states the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM).
The assessment of “excess mortality,” which compares the deaths of the month in reference (220 deaths) with the average of the values of the same month from the years 2016 to 2019 (206 deaths, on average), shows that there was an excess mortality of 6.7%, reflecting the fact that, in those years as a whole, the number of deaths was always lower than the value recorded in September 2024.
In September 2024, 2 dead fetuses were recorded and no deaths under 1 year old were registered. Also in September 2024, there were 163 live births, corresponding to an increase of 7.9% compared to the same month of 2023 (12 more births). The total number of live births registered in the first nine months of 2024 (1,300) was higher than in the same period of 2023 by 1.8% (23 more live births).
The difference between live births and deaths resulted in a negative natural balance of 57 individuals in September 2024, less punishing than in the same month of the previous year, in which it recorded a value of -70. In the first nine months of 2024, the accumulated value of the natural balance was -650, showing a decrease compared to that observed in the same period of 2023 (-833).
In the ninth month of 2024, 155 marriages were celebrated, corresponding to a drop of 4.9% compared to the number of marriages performed in September 2023 (8 fewer marriages). From January to September, 908 marriages were celebrated, 57 (+6.7%) more than in the same period of the previous year.
