The Portuguese Navy reported this morning that since Friday afternoon (November 1st), it has been in a “monitoring and follow-up operation of a Russian Federation scientific and oceanographic research ship, which, this morning, passed through Madeiran territorial waters.
“The Maritime Operations Centre permanently monitored the activity of the ship, coordinating the deployment of two naval ships; the NRP Setúbal and the NRP Tejo.
The Russian Federation ship left Madeian waters this morning heading towards the South Atlantic, thus ending a mission that lasted over 50 hours.
“The Navy, through these monitoring and surveillance actions, guarantees the defence and security of maritime spaces under sovereignty, jurisdiction or national responsibility, contributes to the protection of Portugal’s interests and its critical infrastructure, while ensuring compliance of the international commitments assumed within the framework of the Atlantic Alliance, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
