Tourit Accomodation Breaks Records

Tourist accommodations in the Region registered new records last August.

According to data released today by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in the reference month, 221.3 thousand guests entered regional tourist accommodation, giving rise to 1,227.5 thousand, which corresponds to increases of 8.9% and 4.6%, respectively, compared to August 2023.

Hotels accounted for 69.0% of overnight stays (846.9 thousand), decreasing by 2.0% year-on-year, while local accommodation (28.7% of the total) and rural tourism (2.3% of the total) recorded increases of 25.1% and 4.6%, in the same order.

The net bed occupancy rate of tourist accommodation in the reference month was 75.6%, the same as in the same month of the previous year. In turn, the room occupancy rate reached 83.8%.

Average stays suffered a slight drop to 4.94 nights; in the same month of the previous year, it stood at 5.12. The highest values were recorded in the hotel segment, with an average of 5.02 nights, followed by local accommodation (4.88 nights) and rural tourism (3.57 nights).

Analysing the data from January to August this year, 1,501.4 thousand were registered, 5.7% more than in the same period of 2023. Consequently, they exceeded 7.9 million (+6.4% than in the same period of 2023).

The top 10 foreign markets account for 85.5% of the total overnight stays recorded, with the biggest positive change corresponding to guests coming from Germany (16.7% of the total; +5.0% compared to August 2023), while Portugal (16.6%) and the United Kingdom (15.9% of the total) recorded drops of 4.9% and 3.2%, respectively, compared to August 2023.

With regard to total revenue and revenue from accommodation, last August, they grew by 0.1% and 10.4%, respectively, settling, in the same order, at 84.6 million euros and 62.2 million euros.

In August 2024, the average revenue per room (RevPAR) available was around 111.74 euros in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation below 10 beds), +9.3% more than in the same month of the previous year. In turn, the average income per room (ADR) in tourist accommodation went from €119.33 in August 2023 to €133.37 in August 2024 (+11.8% year-on-year change).

In the first eight months of the year, there was an average income of 83.34 euros in tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation below 10 beds), which represents an increase of 11.0% compared to the same period last year. In the hotel sector, RevPAR was €89.70 (+12.1%). As for ADR, the values were higher, totaling 108.88 euros in tourist accommodation (+11.6% year-on-year) and 113.02 euros in hotels (+12.3%).
