Reacting to complaints posted on social networks, accompanied by photographs that showed pimples and spots spread on the skin of bathers who recently frequented Calheta beach, Aleixo Abreu, Environmental Councilor for the Municipality of Calheta, states that the Blue Flagged beach is constantly monitored by law for the quality of the water and sand and that everything is within normal limits.
He further adds, that on hearing the news, technicians contacted the municipality’s public health delegate asking them to recheck their data and ensure that everything complies with the law. He then assured bathers that the Calheta beach is safe to use.
Images shared on social networks show an ‘alleged virus’ that spreads in dirty water, causing skin reactions.
When asked about the indicators obtained by the public health office, a municipality spokesperson said it was a technical issue they were not competent to discuss. They then asked the population to remain calm as these cases happen ‘sporadically.’
