Preventative Fire Measures in Santa Cruz

The municipality of Santa Cruz has issued a press statement with regard to fire prevention in the municipality.

In view of the adverse weather conditions forecast for the next few days and the theaters of operations taking place in several municipalities in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the Municipality of Santa Cruz through the Santa Cruz Fire Brigade Company (CBSC), in collaboration with the Municipal Civil Protection Service and other security authorities, reinforced its daily device with additional prevention and surveillance measures, aiming at protecting the population and mitigating the risk of forest fires“, Filipe Sousa began by saying.

Measures implemented:

“1. Enhanced Surveillance and Patrolling

– During the 19th and 20th of August, patrols and armed surveillance will be carried out at strategic points in the municipality, such as Roma – Santa Cruz, João do Prado, Capela da Pereira, and Moinhos – Caniço.

– The GNR will be present in mobile patrol actions at critical times.

2. Pre-Positioning of Media in the Camacha Section:

– In order to ensure a quick and effective response, the CBSC will reinforce the pre-positioning of assets with an enlarged device in the highlighted section of Camacha. This effort includes the commitment of 6 firefighters accompanied by 2 combat vehicles with extended attack capacity. This team will be on standby between 1:00 pm and 8:00 pm on the 19th and 20th prepared to act immediately, if necessary.

3. Daily Device Maintenance:

– In addition to the reinforcement in Camacha, the Santa Cruz Fire Brigade Company will continue to guarantee its daily device in all areas of the municipality, ensuring that the usual levels of readiness and safety remain unchanged, even in the face of increased operational demands.

4. Continuous Monitoring and Communication:

– The CBSC Dispatch Center will intensify the monitoring of areas with the highest risk of fire and coordinate patrolling, ensuring continuous and efficient communication with teams on the ground.

Appeal to the Population:

The population is strongly advised to avoid risky behaviors, such as burning or the use of fire in forest areas. In case of a sighting of smoke or flames, 112 should be contacted immediately.

Validity of Measurements:

The preventive actions will be in force between August 19th and 20th, a period considered favourable to the creation and spread of forest fires.

The Municipality of Santa Cruz, through the Santa Cruz Fire Brigade, reaffirms its commitment to ensuring the protection of the community and natural heritage, counting on the collaboration of all to prevent risk situations.”
