The Portuguese Association Against Childhood Obesity (APCOI) has confirmed that as of yesterday, registration for the ‘Heroes of the Fruit’ project is open. “This is the largest education initiative for healthy eating in Portugal,” which in the last school year registered a record participation of 81,730 students.
Since 2011, the initiative, which is primarily supported by ALDI, has already improved the daily eating habits of 661,798 children, ensuring the intake of more than 206 million servings of fruit and vegetables.
“We are very proud to be part of this important project. Throughout this partnership with APCOI, we have been able to promote lasting changes in the eating habits of the little ones, stimulating the daily consumption of healthy foods, “says Elke Muranyi, Corporate Responsibility Director of ALDI Portugal.
Mário Silva, President of APCOI, recalls that “in the last edition, the Heroes of the Fruit project reached 70% of Portuguese municipalities. This school year we want to take the initiative even further.”
Registration for the 13th edition of the school project is free, and all registrations must be made by the 16th of October at www.heroisdafruta.com (World Food Day).
Pre-school or 1st cycle students from any public or private establishment, either from the mainland or outlying regions – Madeira and the Azores are eligible to enter.
“To implement the ‘Fruit Heroes’ method, it will only be necessary for each class to dedicate about 5 to 15 minutes daily for 25 working days,” the statement said.
All students will receive a participation prize, while all participating classes will be entered into a super prize lottery.
