The Commander of the Madeira Maritime Zone, Rui Manuel Teixeira, confirmed this afternoon that everything possible was being done to find the missing German Tourist who had been swept out to sea.
It would appear that the 72-year-old man was walking with his wife, and another couple along the coast between Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar, when a large wave engulfed him, dragging him into the sea. His friend tried to help, but was unable to do so and became slightly injured himself.
In light of the situation the Portuguese Air Force and Navy were called in to assist with the rescue mission, however, later on this evening it was announced that the body of the man had been recovered.
Our thoughts are with his wife, family and friends.
