The president of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, assured protesters and the general public today that his government will not backdown on any of the recent measures taken to combat the recent upward trend of positive Covid-19 cases.
When asked by reporters what he thought of the demonstration, the President of Madeira, growled
“What do you want me to tell you? There was a poster there when I left, saying that the ‘pandemic is a fraud’… I can’t do anything…”
“We live in a democracy and people are free to demonstrate. The government has been elected to make decisions and these decisions are in keeping with the public interest, and the safeguarding of public health. The government will not concede a millimetre on the decisions it has made.”
“What is happening in Europe, and in our country means that we have to act promptly and decide on the best strategies. First to be protected is human life. Second is public health, and this has to be safeguarded in any situation, and the government will do everything in its power to minimize the risks of this situation [pandemic] and ensure that people continue to live within some form of normality with clear rules clear about how to protect the health of the community.”
