Official figures released by the Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM), show that the overall crime rate in Madeira dropped by 9% in 2020.
In total 6,000 crimes were reported, and when analysed the figures showed that most crimes committed in the Autonomous Region of Madeira were “personally driven” (2,400) and “property driven” (2,200), which together represent 76.5% of the total, opposed to 2019’s figure of 76.8%. Approximately half of the incidents occurred within the municipality of Funchal.
DREM also revealed that, overall, in 2020, the crime rate in Madeira stood at 23.8% and was the lowest in the entire Portuguese territory. It should be noted that this rate was substantially lower than the national average (29%) and that recorded in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (38.2%).
