Madeira’s Regional Secretary for Tourism, Eduardo Jesus, said on Wednesday, the 30th of September, that the minimum services decreed for the easyJet cabin crew strike fall short of the Region’s needs.
He stressed Madeira’s status as an outermost island region and its dependence on air travel, pointing out that, unlike mainland Portugal, it has no alternative land transport links.
Eduardo Jesus argued that connections between Madeira and the mainland should not face drastic reductions. Citing Spain’s protection of its island connections, he criticised the provision for just two flights from Lisbon and one from Porto during the October strike, and two from each city during the December action.
The strikes are scheduled for the 2nd to the 6th of October and the 19th to the 23rd of December. The Regional Government had already requested safeguards for Madeira’s connections, highlighting increased travel around the October public holiday and the Christmas period, when students, residents and Madeirans living elsewhere return to the islands.
