Madeira Opera Project Awarded 55,000 Euros

Magic Flute – Madeira, a project by Carlos Pereira da Costa, has been awarded €55,000 by Portugal’s Directorate-General for the Arts (DGArtes). It was the only project from Madeira selected in the Creation in Music and Opera competition under the 2025 Project Support Programme.

It is one of just five opera projects to receive funding. The other 72 successful applications are music projects.

DGArtes awarded a total of €2.195 million to 77 projects from across Portugal. It received 222 applications, of which 145 went unfunded. Of those, 131 met the eligibility requirements but were not funded because the budget was exhausted; another 14 did not reach the minimum score of 60%.

The funded projects will run until the end of February 2028. They may include the creation and public presentation of works, artistic residencies and performances, as well as activities such as touring, training and research.

The result comes amid wider concern about arts funding. Across several of this year’s DGArtes competitions, projects that met the required standard were left without support after the available budgets ran out.
