New Poncha Project

The Poncha Project Puts Madeira’s Lesser-Known Establishments on the Map

A new community-led project is setting out to discover where the best poncha is served in Madeira, while giving greater visibility and recognition to traditional establishments away from the island’s main tourist routes.

The Poncha is a personal, independent and non-profit project created by a lover of Madeira and its famous traditional drink.

The idea began with photographs and informal poncha reviews shared through Instagram. As more people joined the conversation, it became apparent that Madeira needed a dedicated platform where residents and visitors could discover, compare and rate ponchas served throughout the island.

This led to the creation of an interactive map featuring cafés, restaurants, bars, taverns and other establishments that have already been evaluated by members of the public.

Importantly, reviews are not restricted to the venues currently displayed on the map. Any establishment that appears on Google Maps can be rated through the website. The locations shown on The Poncha’s map are simply those that have already received at least one evaluation.

Users can upload a photograph of their drink, select the type of poncha, including regional, pescador, passion fruit, tangerine, or lime, and award it a score from one to ten. No registration is required.

While the project’s ultimate mission is to discover where Madeira’s best poncha can be found, the journey is considered just as important as the final result. It aims to promote traditional establishments, small bars and less-touristy locations that may seldom appear in conventional visitor guides, despite deserving wider recognition.

The website states that its rankings are independent and cannot be influenced commercially. Establishments cannot pay for a higher position, a better score or preferential treatment. Results are generated automatically from valid community reviews, with both the average rating and the number of evaluations taken into account.

The project is open to both residents and visitors. Madeirans can contribute their local knowledge and recommendations, while tourists are offered an opportunity to venture beyond the most familiar places and enjoy a more authentic island experience.

The team behind The Poncha is encouraging people to explore the map and rate the ponchas they sample. Each new evaluation will help build a broader guide, bring deserving local establishments to public attention and perhaps, eventually, settle the debate over where Madeira’s finest poncha is served.
