The Pain Unit at Madeira’s Regional Health Service (SESARAM) has performed a pioneering procedure using a high-density percutaneous electrode to treat patients living with chronic pain.
The procedure, carried out for the first time at Dr Nélio Mendonça Hospital, combines the electrode with an advanced spinal cord stimulation system.
According to SESARAM, it is the first and only 16-contact percutaneous electrode capable of spanning three vertebral levels with reduced spacing between contacts.
Developed for spinal cord stimulation therapy, the technology gives doctors greater flexibility to personalise treatment according to each patient’s needs and changes in their pain over time.
“This innovation represents an important advance in the healthcare provided in the Region by expanding access to cutting-edge therapies on the Portuguese islands,” SESARAM said in a statement.
The intervention was carried out by a multidisciplinary team led by doctors Duarte Correia and Teresa Ferreira, who are committed to ensuring that patients with chronic pain have access to innovative and specialised care.
SESARAM described the procedure as another highly specialised treatment option now available in Madeira.
